Career as Radiologist

Postby Zelmel » Fri, 26 Jun 2009 11:51 am

Hi,

I'm Dr Sim, from Miri Hospital Sarawak
I quite interested in radiology and would to know more about it.
I completed my 1 year of Housemanship in Sibu last year August. Done medical, O&G, surgery.
Then continued my posting in orthopaedic n pediatric in Sibu
Now i back to medical department after i had been transfered to Miri.

Along my training, i always have the interest in reading x-rays, CT
And i found i quite confident with my USG skill
So i am thinking of doing radiology as my career

So i would like to know in Malaysia, how we can become a radiologist
I dont have much help as we dont have radiologist here until recently
So far the information i have is doing master and FRCR in UK

So for my current working status and experience, what should i do
Can i go for FRCR?
Or i better go for local master?
I need guide here, so luckily i found this forum
I hope i can get the help i need here.

Thank to everyone first

Regards

Hi Dr Sim,

You should apply to any of our Masters programmes, it is a structured course of 4 years - and 3 universities run them.
You can then, also take your FRCR in parallel.
Working in M'sia, the Masters is of course the one of choice but having an FRCR allows you some flexibility working elsewhere.

Radiology is a very exciting frontier, and there are many areas you can specialise in after your basic radiology training.

Hi Dr Evelyn,

Sorry for another question? Now i am not in radiology posting. What should i do? I been asking my hospital director but so far my request had been turn due to not enough medical officer in this hospital, so radiology department had to run without medical officer (however there is one radiologist here)

I emailed UK FRCR for information, it stated that i need to be in radiology training before applying for 1st paper, is it necessary?

If i wanted to do master, what choice i have and how should i apply for it?

Thank you for your time

Dr Sim

Apologies for the late reply.

Yes, you need to be a registrar in Radiology Department or enter the Masters' course, so that you are in training already before being able to take the Part 1, 2 etc of the FRCR.

Understandably, there is difficulty releasing you from service.
Best that you apply formally for the masters programme either in UM, UKM or USM.
